When it comes to resources, no matter how much one has, people tend to have a spirit of scarcity or abundance. Scarcity says “we need to save for when we need it.” Abundance says “use it today, for tomorrow may never come.” Those with a spirit of scarcity long for safety. Those with a spirit of abundance long for adventure.

The eighth organizational tool that can be used mechanically or organically is LANGUAGE. How we understand and use language is important because it shapes the way we behave and believe. How? Words are metaphors. If someone says the word tree, the word itself is not what is being communicated. What is being communicated is the idea of a tree. And although our complete ideas of a tree when we hear the word may be in many ways different than another person’s, they are similar enough that we know what each other means by the word tree.

The seventh organizational tool that can be used mechanically or organically is PARTNERS. In mechanical order, partnerships operate by accountability. Accountability is a huge buzzword in Christian circles. When someone gets into trouble or "falls" into a sin, you routinely hear others claim that a likely reason was that no one was holding that person accountable.

As time passes by in every day of our lives, we are constantly coordinating our activities and schedule with the world around us; even the people you’ve never met before but drive behind when you’re out. If you drive somewhere, you have to coordinate yourself with other cars so that don't you don't get into accidents. Coordinating participation happens differently in organic environments than it does in mechanical.

The fifth organizational tool that can be used mechanically or organically is POWER. In similar ways to the second organizational tool of participation, mechanical order handles power through position. Participants are set into positions on an organizational chart and given control, authority, jurisdiction, permission-granting rights, and influence. The position then demands that they achieve a master plan. The permanent hierarchy determines who holds power and importance permanently.

The fourth organizational tool that can be used mechanically or organically is GROWTH. In mechanical order, growth is forced upon a community in a "large-lump" sort of way. Typically the way this plays out is that a master planner develops a master plan that requires implementing big changes that have been perceived to be the solution for achieving different results. The plan controls the community by requiring growth in massive chunks.

When we choose to operate by mechanical order, we use results-oriented, bottom-line measurement in the form of numeric, linear or statistical evaluations. What?!?! More simply, we decide upon some inanimate numerical goal like # of attendees, # of dollars made, or win-loss record and then put that in charge.

The second organizational tool that can used mechanically or organically is PARTICIPATION. Participation is the way people are involved in the community's purpose. In mechanical order, people are invited to participate by filling in positions in a master plan. For example, setting up ministry programs and asking for volunteers to serve in the ministries. In this case, leaders invite people to participate in ways that serve the plan. They are then inserted into the manufacturing process (program) with the intention that they are a piece that can help bring about the predetermined desired outcome.
